I remember the first day I started working in Change Management. I was so excited and so happy. The only problem was… I didn’t know anything about Change!!
I had been working in Advertising and Marketing for the last 5 years. I knew I had transferable skills but I didn’t really know what Change Management was.
I hadn’t done PROSCI or APMG International, or a Change course at university, or even an internal module on leading change.
I had no previous direct experience, no tools, no templates. I hadn’t even worked on a project before, or in insurance, or Agile.
So on Day 1, I had no idea what to do. It was the hardest day.

But lucky for me, I had an amazing leader, who was very experienced in Change Management.
She took the time in that first week to provide me with an overview of Change Management, and some tools and templates, and the support and confidence to give it a try.
Turns out that’s all I needed - and to this very day, when I’m leading change that impacts thousands of employees, I use similar tools and templates to what she gave me in that first week.
Because the hardest part of Change Management is not managing change, it’s learning how to manage change. And I don’t mean learning theory, I mean the practical application of skills and knowledge to make each change a success.
